Sailing catamaran vs static yacht event: which to choose for your event in Barcelona?

4 min read · 18 April 2026 · Vértice Experiences

When someone starts planning a nautical event in Barcelona, one of the first questions that arises is whether to hold it underway or at anchor and celebrate the event in static mode. It is a choice that seems secondary but actually determines the type of experience, the possible capacity, the budget and the profile of guests who will enjoy it most.

There is no universal answer: the best format depends on what you want to achieve. This comparison breaks down the key factors so you can make the right decision before requesting a quote.

The event underway on a catamaran

A catamaran in active navigation is a different proposition from any other type of event. The vessel moves, the wind enters, the horizon changes. Attendees are in direct contact with the marine environment. This sensory experience is the greatest asset of the underway format: it is hard to forget and very hard to replicate on land.

The catamaran is the most suitable type of vessel for this format for several reasons. Its twin-hull platform generates superior transverse stability to a monohull, significantly reducing boat movement and making it more enjoyable for guests less accustomed to sailing. The wide central deck allows comfortable movement of attendees, and the trampoline nets at the bow are a unique enjoyment space that does not exist on any motor yacht.

This format works especially well for:

  • Groups of friends (hen/stag parties, birthdays, friend reunions)
  • Team building with active activities (sailing, paddleboard from deck, snorkelling)
  • Events where the experience itself is the protagonist, not the protocol
  • Groups who want an alternative to the typical beach day

The capacity limit in active navigation is more restrictive than in static mode: a 40-foot catamaran can comfortably carry between 8 and 15 people sailing comfortably. More people is possible but begins to compromise the experience.

The static event aboard a luxury yacht

An event in static mode — the boat moored or anchored, without sailing — is a completely different format. The vessel becomes a private stage: an exclusive space with deck, air-conditioned interior, galley and on-board service. The experience is more controlled, more formal and lends itself better to more elaborate production formats.

The large motor yacht is the king of the static event. A yacht like the Sunseeker Predator 84 has three differentiated decks that allow the event to be organised by zone: the flybridge for the welcome cocktail, the main deck for dinner and the stern for the after-party. With produced lighting, high-end catering and live music, the experience is comparable — and in many cases superior — to that of any private venue on land.

For large-format events (50 to 150 people), the Catamaran Cala is the most versatile option in Barcelona. Despite its name, in static event mode the Cala functions as an event platform with the entire deck surface available for free circulation, bar area, stage and buffet catering. Its 20-metre LOA and the width of its decks allow crowd densities that would be unmanageable on a motor yacht at the same price.

The static event works especially well for:

  • Company dinners and annual celebrations
  • Product presentations to clients
  • Loyalty events with protocol
  • Board meetings in an exclusive setting
  • Weddings and high-level social events

Direct comparison: the factors that matter

Factor Sailing catamaran Static yacht
Comfortable capacity 8–20 guests 15–150 guests
Sensory experience High (wind, movement, horizon) Controlled (exclusivity, comfort)
Technical production Limited (sound, simple catering) Full (AV, elite catering, stage)
Formality level Casual-premium Premium-formal
Weather dependency High (needs good wind) Low (can be held in rain)
Price per person 60–120 € 80–250 €
Typical duration 4–8 hours 3–6 hours

The weather factor: the variable that most changes the decision

One aspect that is underestimated when choosing the format is weather dependency. An underway event depends directly on the day's meteorological conditions: with strong wind (over 25 knots) or rough sea, sailing ceases to be enjoyable for most guest profiles. This does not mean the event is cancelled, but it may lose some of its appeal.

The static event is much more robust against adverse weather. The boat can be moored at the pontoon, the deck can have awnings or canopies, and the air-conditioned interior guarantees comfort regardless of what happens outside. For events where the day's weather is unpredictable (autumn, spring) or when the client cannot afford uncertainty (company events with guests travelling from outside), the static format significantly reduces operational risk.

"The question is not which format is better in the abstract, but what kind of memory you want your guests to take away. One thing is to feel the wind on the deck; another is to dine with views of Barcelona from the flybridge of a 25-metre yacht."

What if I want both?

There is a hybrid format that we are increasingly asked about at Vértice Experiences: sailing during the first hours of the event (cocktails and appetisers on board while the boat sails) and then anchoring at a quiet spot for dinner or the main party. This formula captures the best of both worlds: the sensory experience of sailing at the start, when attendees are most receptive, and the comfort and production of the static event for the bulk of the evening.

This format requires a vessel with capacity for both phases — the Catamaran Cala or the Sunseeker Predator 84 are the most suitable — and more careful logistical coordination, but the result is an event with a clear narrative: it starts in motion and ends in serenity.

Summary: how to choose

Choose a sailing catamaran if: your group has fewer than 20 people, the active experience is the protagonist, the per-person budget is tight and the guest profile enjoys nature and movement.

Choose a static yacht if: the group is larger than 20 people, you need elaborate technical production, the event has protocol or you want maximum logistical certainty regardless of the weather.

Consider the hybrid format if: the budget allows, the group has between 15 and 60 people and you want an event that combines different sensations in a single day.
